Istiaia is the administrative and commercial center of North Evia and the seat of the Municipality of Istiaia–Aidipsos. Built on fertile plains at 36 meters above sea level and only 5 km from the coast, Istiaia combines the energy of a small town with easy access to the beaches of Oreoi and Agiokampos.
According to mythology, the city was named after the nymph Istiaia, daughter of Yrieas, son of Poseidon, and sister of Oreos. Some also connect the name to the words “istion” or “istos,” referring to the masts built from the timber of Mount Telethrio. Homer described the ancient city as “rich in vines,” praising its fertile vineyards.
Archaeological finds dating back to 2000 BC show that the area was inhabited long before the classical period. During the Trojan War, Istiaia joined the campaign of the Abantes under King Elephinor. Later, it became part of the Athenian League and alternated between prosperity and destruction. Herodotus mentions that Xerxes’ army camped here after the naval battle of Artemisium, while Thucydides recounts the revolt of North Evia and the subsequent punitive expedition led by Pericles.
The ancient city stood further west, near the modern village of Oreoi. The modern town developed shortly before the Ottoman occupation under the name Xirochori. During the Greek War of Independence, Istiaia was a site of early battles between Greek and Ottoman forces. It became officially part of the Greek state in 1833 and has since remained the most important urban center in North Evia.
Today, Istiaia is a lively town of about 4,000 residents. It is known for its agriculture — especially vineyards and vegetables — as well as for its warm hospitality. The town also hosts the Natural History Museum of Istiaia, featuring the largest bird collection in Greece, with 191 native species.
Istiaia is located 20 km from the port of Agiokampos and is easily connected to the beaches of Rovies, Vasilika, and Agios Nikolaos. It is an excellent base for exploring both the seaside and the mountainous landscapes of northern Evia.
