Near Istiaia in North Evia, lies a small but sacred chapel known as Panagia Dinious. It is famous for its miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary and a powerful story that has been passed down for generations.
According to tradition, during the Ottoman occupation, a Turkish soldier fired his gun at a Greek who was hiding behind the icon of the Virgin Mary. The bullet struck the icon on the forehead — but miraculously returned and killed the soldier. The mark of the bullet remains visible to this day.
This miracle gave the chapel its name: Panagia Dinious (or “Donious”), from the Turkish word “Donus,” meaning return. Many locals still call it “Our Lady of the Return,” believing that prayers offered there often bring answered blessings.
Another version connects the name with the nearby Diniorema stream, a small river flowing beside the chapel. Some believe the name comes from this natural feature, originally pronounced “Panagia Dinious.” Though less widespread, this version reflects the area’s strong connection between faith and nature.
The chapel remains a quiet place of devotion and peace. Visitors light candles, pray before the icon, and feel the serene atmosphere that surrounds the site. It’s a small but deeply spiritual stop for anyone exploring the sacred landscape of Northern Evia.
