Oreoi is a seaside village in North Evia, rich in history and maritime tradition. Located just 5 km west of Istiaia, it stands by the calm waters of the Oreoi Channel and serves as the natural harbor of the area. With its picturesque port and long heritage, Oreoi blends ancient history with modern Greek charm.
Built only 10 meters above sea level, Oreoi offers a relaxed coastal atmosphere. Its port is the second most organized in Evia after Chalkida, providing mooring for fishing boats, sailboats, and yachts. In summer, the village becomes lively with visitors enjoying its waterfront tavernas, fresh seafood, and gentle sea breeze.
The name “Oreoi” has several possible origins. It may come from the Greek word “ora” (care, attention) or from the mythical king Oreos, brother of Istiaia. Another popular explanation suggests it derived from the phrase “our land is beautiful” (“oi topoi mas einai oraioi”) — a statement that truly fits this coastal landscape.
Oreoi’s history is closely linked to Istiaia. In 446 BC, after Istiaia’s revolt against Athens, Pericles expelled its inhabitants and established 2,000 Athenian settlers here, creating the new city of Oreoi. Over the centuries, the town saw power shifts between Macedonians, Romans, and later Byzantines and Ottomans, each leaving marks of architecture and culture.
The symbol of Oreoi is the Marble Bull, discovered underwater in 1965 during harbor works. Carved from white Pentelic marble, it is 3.2 meters long and weighs nearly five tons. Depicted in an attacking stance, the bull was likely a votive offering and today stands proudly by the harbor — one of the largest marble sculptures ever found in Greece.
On a hill above the village lie the ruins of the Castle of Oreoi, built on the ancient acropolis. It was later restored during the Byzantine period and reinforced by the Franks. In 1275, the knight Licarios used it as a base for his rebellion against the Franks. Today, only parts of the walls remain, but the view from the top is breathtaking.
Visitors can stroll along the harbor, explore local ruins, and enjoy seafood at seaside tavernas. Nearby beaches like Taxiarchis and Neos Pyrgos are perfect for swimming and sunset views. Oreoi is an ideal stop for travelers exploring North Evia’s coastal route.
