The Monastery of Saint Nicholas Galataki is one of the oldest and most scenic monasteries in North Evia. Built 200 meters above the sea, it offers stunning views of the Evian Gulf and the Boeotian coast. Surrounded by pine forests, it becomes especially beautiful in spring when the monastery celebrates the translation of Saint Nicholas’ relics on May 20.
The monastery is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the protector of sailors, regarded as the Christian successor of Poseidon. Scholars believe it was founded on the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to the sea god, in the area once known as the city of Aiges. Tradition says a captain from Constantinople, saved from shipwreck through Saint Nicholas’ help, rebuilt the monastery and became a monk there — giving the site its name, “Galataki.”
Other theories link the name to local dairy herds or to ancient Greek festivals like the “Galaxia.” Regardless of its etymology, Galataki remains a sacred place where myth and faith meet.
The main church, built in 1576, is a cross-in-square temple with a dome and a small chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. A hidden passage leads from the chapel to a refuge above the roof, used during pirate raids. The frescoes, painted in 1586 by the Theban workshop of Georgios and Frangos Kondaris, depict scenes from the life of Saint Nicholas and the martyrdom of the saints, reflecting the influence of the Cretan School.
On the western side stands a massive stone tower from the 15th century, overlooking the sea. Tradition says Saint David of Evia himself restored it to protect the monks from raids. Today, it houses the monastery’s guest quarters, library, and a small exhibition of sacred relics and manuscripts.
Originally a male monastery, Galataki became a women’s convent in 1946. The nuns maintain the buildings, gardens, and the spiritual atmosphere that makes this site a beacon of peace and faith for locals and visitors alike.
The monastery is located near the town of Limni, about a 25-minute drive from Rovies and Iliahtida Apartments. The route winds through green hills and pine forests, offering breathtaking views. Major celebrations take place on December 6 and May 20, attracting pilgrims from all over Greece.
The Monastery of Saint Nicholas Galataki is not just a religious monument — it’s a living symbol of Evia’s faith, nature, and history. Visiting it feels like stepping into a different time, where serenity and tradition coexist.
