The Monastery of Saint Irene Chrysovalantou is located between the seaside villages of Rovies and Ilia in North Evia. Built on a green hillside overlooking the Evian Gulf, it offers a calm, spiritual atmosphere surrounded by olive trees and pine forests.
The monastery is a dependency of Saint George Monastery in Ilia. In 1990, it was entrusted to a new sisterhood under Abbess Chrysovalanti. The complex includes two chapels — dedicated to Saint Irene Chrysovalantou and Saint Onouphrios the Hermit — both decorated with beautiful Byzantine-style frescoes.
In the olive grove below the main building lies the Chapel of Archangel Michael, an old metochion of Saint George Monastery. It celebrates on November 8 and is considered the spiritual protector of the wider area, known as “Taxiarchis Ilion.”
Although the monastery doesn’t yet have a large central church, the small community of three nuns keeps it alive with prayer and hospitality. Visitors often sit on the terrace, enjoying the breathtaking view of the sea and the tranquility that surrounds the site.
The monastery is only a 5-minute drive from Rovies and about 10 minutes from Ilia. The coastal road offers a scenic route between the villages with panoramic sea views.
