Just outside the village of Ilia, near the Thermal Springs of Aidipsos, lies the Monastery of Saint George — a spiritual site with a history that reaches back through the centuries. Built in a landscape of breathtaking natural beauty, the monastery is one of the most significant religious and cultural landmarks of North Evia.
The monastery was relocated to its current position from an older site above the Aidipsos Baths, where today stands a small chapel also dedicated to Saint George. Historians believe that the monastery dates back to before the 15th century, possibly as early as the 12th century.
Some scholars connect it to a monastery mentioned in a Papal sigillum of Innocent III and later described by the Ottoman admiral and traveler Piri Reis as “Aja Jorgy.” These records confirm the monastery’s continuous presence for many centuries.
The main church is a cross-in-square temple with a dome, decorated with frescoes painted in 1727. Its wood-carved iconostasis, created in 1834, is a masterpiece of ecclesiastical art, covering the entire width of the church. The carvings depict angelic figures and biblical scenes across three tiers — the despotic icons, miniatures, and the cross section.
Among the icons, “The Sacrifice of Abraham” stands out, positioned opposite the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus — symbolizing two great acts of sacrifice and faith.
During the Ottoman occupation, the monastery suffered repeated raids due to its wealth and cultural importance. In 1821, the Turks destroyed many sacred relics and manuscripts. Yet, the monastery was rebuilt and remains a symbol of resilience and faith for the people of Evia.
Today, the Monastery of Saint George in Ilia operates as a women’s convent. Visitors can explore the beautifully preserved church, admire the iconography, and enjoy stunning views over the Evian Gulf. It is a peaceful destination for prayer, reflection, and cultural exploration.
The monastery is located 3 km from Ilia and about 25 km from Rovies and Iliahtida Apartments. The drive offers wonderful sea and forest views, and the site is best visited in the morning for a tranquil experience.
