Bolovinaina Gorge, also known as the Nileas Gorge or the Gorge of Arapis, is located near Agia Anna and Paleovrysi in northern Evia. Stretching for about 1,400 meters, it’s one of the most exciting and scenic routes for nature lovers and adventure seekers who enjoy river trekking.
The gorge takes its name from the local heroine Bolovinaina, who, according to legend, jumped off the cliff to avoid capture by the Turks. Today, the gorge stands as a symbol of courage, surrounded by steep rock walls, crystal-clear waters, and lush vegetation.
The gorge is about 12 km from Agia Anna and roughly 45 km from Rovies and Iliahtida Apartments.
The hike can be done with local guides or organized river trekking tours. A helmet is recommended for safety due to possible falling rocks, and visitors should have a moderate fitness level.
The legend tells of Bolovinaina, a brave woman from Agia Anna who chose death over capture during the Ottoman era. Her leap from the cliff gave the gorge its name. The cave within the gorge also served as a refuge during Ottoman times but tragically became the site of a massacre when the entrance was set on fire.
Today, Bolovinaina Gorge is a breathtaking natural destination — wild, mysterious, and full of history. It’s perfect for hiking, photography, and connecting with nature.
